Holland America Line and Seabourn celebrate partnership renewal
In recognition of Earth Day, Holland America Line and Seabourn today are announcing the renewal of their partnership with Marine Conservation Institute. The partnership with the Washington State–based organisation began in 2010 with the “Our Marvelous Oceans” program, and will continue with the signing of a new three-year agreement that runs through 2016.
The goal of “Our Marvelous Oceans” is to foster greater understanding of the marine environment through guest and staff education and commitment to sustainably sourced seafood on shipboard menus. The partnership also includes a new “Saving the Ocean’s Gems” program to be rolled out in fall 2013 that promotes Marine Protected Areas — parts of the ocean set aside to protect endangered species, special habitats and/or cultural heritage sites — especially along the ships’ itineraries.
“Over the past three years we have learned a tremendous amount from the Marine Conservation Institute about protecting our oceans, and it’s only fitting that we renew our partnership on Earth Day,” said Stein Kruse , president and CEO of Holland America Line, and chairman, Seabourn. “It is important that we continue to provide information to our guests and crewmembers about what we can all do to protect and improve the health of our oceans, and we’re fortunate to have the international experts at the Marine Conservation Institute working with us as part of our many environmental endeavors.”
“We are delighted to continue the committed partnership that we have forged in the past three years with Holland America Line and Seabourn,” said Dr. Lance Morgan , President of Marine Conservation Institute, located in Seattle, Wash. “We share a strong interest in healthy oceans, and this partnership has provided an innovative opportunity to advance the conservation message and has had real-world impact toward furthering our mission through projects such as sustainable seafood purchasing.”
Morgan added, “We look forward with enthusiasm to developing the programming around ‘Saving the Ocean’s Gems’ in the next year.”
Both Holland America Line and Seabourn strive to ensure that seafood menu selections served aboard both lines are responsibly sourced, promoting the continued viability of fish species essential to a biologically diverse marine environment. The Marine Conservation Institute determines the sustainability of a particular seafood item by referring to well-established seafood sustainability ratings. They then apply their professional expertise and judgment to confirm the sustainability of the selection.

Norwegian Breakaway arrives in Southampton
Norwegian Breakaway has become one of the biggest ships to make its debut in Southampton after arriving at the UK port ahead of a trade preview.
The Norwegian Cruise Line ship made a pre-inaugural overnight sailing from Rotterdam to arrive in the UK port.
Agents from across the UK trade will be invited onboard today as the 4,028-passenger ship is showcased.
The Norwegian delegation will be led by chief executive Kevin Sheehan.
Agents are also being given the opportunity to meet representatives from key cruise destinations, including Alaska, Seattle, Miami, Clearwater Beach, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma.
UK & Ireland business development director Nick Wilkinson said: “Our Partners First philosophy recognises the central part that the trade plays in product distribution, and the Engage & Reward programme idea is rooted in that.
“Attending agents will have the opportunity to earn incremental commission for their organisation through attending the various educational elements of the launch activity.”
Norwegian Breakaway leaves tomorrow for its homeport of New York where it will be officially named on May 8th.
Summer cruises to Bermuda start two days later.

A new approach to cruising
Royal Caribbean International has unveiled the first details of its Quantum-class ships.
They will see the introduction ‘game-changing’ cruise options such as a skydiving experience that transports guests more than 300 feet in the air; venues that include what is believed to be the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea with bumper cars, roller skating and more; and the cruise line’s largest and most advanced staterooms to date.
The new, larger staterooms enable innovation in design, storage and comfort, including virtual balconies. Every stateroom on Quantum of the Seas will have a view.
Other highlights will include North Star, a jewel-shaped, glass capsule that transports guests more than 300 feet above the ocean and over the sides of the ship to deliver 360-degree views.
Two70° is a multi-level room that offers 270-degree panoramic sea views through vast, floor-to-ceiling glass walls spanning almost three decks at the stern of the ship. There is a comfortable space for guests to sit back and relax and in the evening guests will be entertained by a combination of live shows. Guests can also look forward to the Music Hall which will host live performances, DJs, night parties, billiards and more.
For multi-generational families, Family-Connected staterooms deliver more flexibility, using three different stateroom categories that connect to form a special layout with separate bedrooms and bathrooms. With Quantum of the Seas, Royal Caribbean also introduces the largest variety of stateroom categories, including new Studio staterooms, some with balconies for single travellers, three Junior Suite categories and larger Loft Suites.
Quantum of the Seas will sail out of the New York Harbor from her homeport of Cape Liberty on 7- to 12-night itineraries during the 2014/15 winter season. Bookings will be open to Crown & Anchor Society loyalty programme members starting May 27 before opening to the general public on June 4.
